Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 28th, for the Cape Fear Literacy Council’s 8th Annual Literacy Luncheon featuring student presenters and special guest, celebrated author and lecturer, Dr. Elliot Engel. For the 2017 Luncheon, Cape Fear Literacy Council is very pleased to announce the receipt of a $25,000 “Challenge Grant” from Live Oak Bank. Live Oak Bank has generously agreed to match every sponsorship and donation for the Luncheon, up to $25,000, doubling the impact of each investment in the Literacy Council! Luncheon guests will also have the opportunity to hear from students whose lives have been changed through their experiences at CFLC and enjoy a performance from the CFLC Readers’ Theater, a popular interactive learning program in which performers read from a script to interpret a text for an audience. Back by popular demand, Cape Fear Literacy Council announces its 2nd Annual “Last Ticket Standing” Reverse Raffle. Join us and Master of Ceremony, Alan Perry, at the Grand Prize Drawing on Monday, April 24 ,2017, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Bill’s Front Porch Pub & Brewery at 4238 Market Street. Ticket price includes a Carolina BBQ buffet dinner for two guests and additional dinner buffet tickets may be purchased at the door for $15.00 each. There will be a cash bar at the event. CLICK HERE FOR FULL CONTEST RULES HOW A REVERSE RAFFLE WORKS: Unlike a typical raffle, in a Reverse Raffle there is an elimination drawing. The owner of the last ticket drawn wins the Grand Prize, which is 50% of the total ticket sales. Two hundred (200) tickets will be available for sale at $100 each. The Grand Prize will be 50% of ticket sales, up to $10,000. Winners are solely responsible for any and all taxes due on the award.  Each ticket has a number from 1 – 200 on it. Throughout the evening, numbers are pulled at random from a tumbler. As each number is pulled, that ticket  is removed from the display, thus eliminating that ticket owner from the Grand Prize drawing. The last ticket drawn wins the Grand Prize. Ticket owners need not be present to win. Businesses, companies, and non-profit organizations may purchase a ticket or several people can share the cost of a ticket (see Official Rules below for full details). The ticket price is not tax-deductible. You must be 18 years or older to purchase a Reverse Raffle Ticket. CFLC: Buzz-worthy News!!! The Spelling Bee is back and better than ever for an amazing 29th year!

  Cape Fear Literacy Council proudly announces the 29th Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy! The Bee is on Thursday, September 15th at 7 PM at the Terraces on Sir Tyler. We invite the community to share in this fun evening devoted to words! Admission is FREE and there will be light refreshments, a cash bar, audience games and prizes, and fun for both audience and competitors. You can help your favorite team with the “Best Cheering Section” prize! Not the traditional spelling bee, this friendly competition fields teams of up to 4 adults who work together to spell words that are increasingly more difficult in each round. The grand prize – in addition to bragging rights – is the engraved, traveling Championship Trophy. Other team prizes include “Best Team Name,” “Best Costume” and “Best Cheering Section” prize! Businesses, civic groups and individuals are invited to register a team of up to 4 adult spellers for $400 or become a sponsor at the $500 to $2,000 levels. NC Azalea Festival: Join CFLC for the MGC Parade Mile – April 9th at the Azalea Festival!

The Parade Mile will take place at approximately 8:55a on April 9, 2016 immediately before the Azalea Festival Parade. According to the festival’s website, the parade brings approximately 100K people to downtown Wilmington each year.The race will be broken down into several heats, include and encourage the participation of children, and the final heat will be participants in Azalea Festival garb, a fun mile with people in southern belle dresses and seersucker suits. The course will be an out and back through a portion of the parade route on 3rd street starting and finishing in front of the Grand Stands of the North Carolina Azalea Festival Parade. The parade will start shortly after that last heat.The 2016 race will be for the benefit of Cape Fear Literacy Council. Bookmarks – The buzz on the 2015 Spelling Bee Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 5:58 by Ben Steelman   The folks at the Cape Fear Literacy Council are rounding up a few last-minute teams for its 28th annual Spelling Bee for Literacy, coming up at 7 p.m. Sept. 17. Some changes are coming to the venerable fundraiser. The Literacy Council is moving the event to The Terraces at Sir Tyler, 1826 Sir Tyler Drive (across Military Cutoff Road from Mayfaire Town Center). Crowds at the event had outgrown the parking space at Pine Valley United Methodist Church. (One side benefit: This year, the literacy council can offer a cash bar.) Teams are being expanded. Businesses, non-profits and clubs can have up to four spellers on each team. In addition to spelling abilities, they’ll compete for honors for Best Costume, Best Team Name and Best Cheering Section.
