Our volunteer tutors are the heart of everything we do. Donating your time and expertise allows us to keep our services free for those who need us most.
In New Hanover and Brunswick counties, it is estimated that 122,000+ people read at a basic or below basic level.

Be a tutor!
- Teach 1-on-1 or small classes
- Fight poverty, inequality and crime though education
- Empower financial, technological and health literacy
- Receive high-quality tutor training
- Have a positive impact on people’s lives
Help students
- Read and write better
- Improve math skills
- Study for the GED
- Learn computer skills
- Read, write, and speak better English (ESL)
- Prepare for the citizenship test
Requirements
- No teaching or foreign language experience needed
- Be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate
- Complete a 9-hour training workshop. Materials and certification fees apply ($20 for AL, $30 for ESL)
- Sign a confidentiality agreement to protect your student’s privacy
- Agree to a 6-month commitment (1:1 tutors) or a full 10 week session (ESL classes)
