Opening Doors Through Education
“Now I’m no longer afraid… I have a long way to go, but I can do it now.”
— Marcela, ESL Student
Each student at Cape Fear Literacy Council has a unique story, but everyone overcomes barriers and works hard to improve their lives through the power of education. The speakers at our 2026 Luncheon exemplify the courage it takes to get started and the doors that open when you refuse to quit.

Marcela came to CFLC in a time of need but got more help than she’d even hoped for. Referred by the library because she had to complete insurance and medical paperwork, Marcela not only learned that life skill, but also joined our Memoir and Computer classes because she felt her writing and tech skills “were holding her back.” A bright and enthusiastic student, she excels when she has guidance and encouragement.
Marcela is abundantly grateful to all her volunteer teachers, not just for her improved abilities, but for boosting her confidence and giving her a new sense of opportunity. When she was recently asked about her journey with CFLC and what the future holds, Marcela replied, “My tutor Judy is great at what she does. I have been working with her for a few months now and she has made me love writing. Now I feel very comfortable; now I can do other things. Because of that, I signed up for classes to become a real estate broker.”

Isaiah came to the Literacy Council through a referral from LINC, Inc. He had worked hard to pass every other subject for his high school equivalency but dreaded Math. Matched with a 1-on-1 tutor, Kevin, he started to make progress… but he had to stop out (not drop out!) for several months. Isaiah credits Christian Recovery Centers, Inc., for helping him in his journey, saying, “recovery is a 360-degree approach, including my academic goals through the Cape Fear Literacy Council family.”
When he returned, reinvigorated and focused, Isaiah worked with another tutor, Mike, and finally succeeded in his quest. At CFLC, Isaiah found the support he needed and a judgment-free zone where he could confidentially work towards his learning goals. Now settled into his new job at a local community center, Isaiah shared, “I couldn’t have done it without them – the Literacy Council is part of my story. Someday, I plan to have my own business.”
The big accomplishments that we share about our students’ journeys are the result of many, many small steps which required hard work, patience, determination, and, most of all, courage. Every hour of instruction, every ‘a-ha!’ moment accumulates toward bigger, real-life goals that change the possibilities for our students and their families forever.
Every dollar given makes our tailored, confidential, and high-quality programs available to adult learners in our community, putting them on the path to opportunity and success.
Thank you – we can only do this great work with your help!
