How Moving Our Books is Helping Us Serve More Adults

Everybody loves a good transformation story, and this one is about a humble storage shed turned into a thriving hub for our Amazon book store project. For the past few years, our book inventory has been stored offsite. But as our programs grew, so did the cost and complexity of maintaining external storage.

Our Amazon book sales project, led entirely by the Friends of Literacy volunteer group, has been a reliable source of revenue since 2019. Not only do these sales help fund our adult literacy programs, but they also provide the community with an opportunity to engage with Cape Fear Literacy Council by donating books, attending book sales or purchasing from our online store. As the costs of our offsite storage unit continued to rise, we knew it was time to find a more sustainable solution.

Enter the shed on our property.

Earlier this year, during a strategic meeting, the idea to use our existing shed space for book storage emerged. It was a lightbulb moment: by upfitting the shed, we could store the books on-site, reduce expenses, and free up space in our building for additional programming. After months of planning, organizing, and a lot of precise measuring, the move became a reality in mid-September.

Thanks to the vision and hard work of our volunteers and leadership team, the entire process went smoothly. The best part? The savings from this move will be reinvested into our literacy programs, helping us expand our reach and serve more adults in our community.

We couldn’t have done it without the incredible support from the Friends of Literacy  and everyone who donated their time, energy, and resources to make this move possible. This is a win for our programs, our community, and our mission.

Donate Your Books and Support Adult Literacy

With our new on-site storage space ready, we’re excited to accept even more book donations from the community. Your support not only clears your shelves but also helps someone in our community access life-changing educational opportunities. All proceeds from our book sales go directly toward funding our adult literacy programs.

We accept a wide variety of books, including:

  • Fiction and nonfiction
  • Children’s books
  • Textbooks (published within the last five years)
  • Rare or collectible books
