CFLC celebrates its newly-expanded campus with an Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on April 22, 2015!

CFLC celebrates its newly-expanded campus with an Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on April 22, 2015!

ABOUT THE ‘RAISING THE ROOF’ BUILDING RENOVATION In early 2014, CFLC embarked on its “Raising the Roof” renovation to up-fit a building on the CFLC campus in order to provide educational services to significantly more adults in the Cape Fear region. Renovations were completed in the fall of 2014, expanding Cape Fear Literacy Council’s teaching facility by 75%, with an estimated cost of $200,000. The need for literacy services has reached a critical level in our area. As our community sees an era of unprecedented growth, citizens must be able to read, write, calculate, understand and communicate in English. They also need to think critically in the context of their work, families and communities at levels far more advanced than ever before. CFLC enjoyed much community support during the renovation of Building B — in the Spring of 2014, CFLC received two challenge grants totaling $35,000 – one from an anonymous donor through the New Hanover County Community Foundation, and a second generously committed by community leader, Dr. George Huffmon and Atlantic Neurosurgical & Spine Specialists, PA. In September 2014 CFLC met both Challenge Grants – raising over $37,000 for a total match of over $72,000. Additionally – hundreds of volunteers donated thousands of hours of manpower to assist CFLC in renovation assistance and beautification projects. Today, Building B houses CFLC’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program and a variety of student and tutor meeting facilities and classrooms utilized by the organization’s 500+ student population. ABOUT THE OPEN HOUSE & VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION CELEBRATION Please join the Staff and Board of Directors of the Literacy Council for an Open House celebrating the renovation and honoring our 200+ Volunteer Tutors and 300+ Non-Instructional Volunteers. As Executive Director, Yasmin Tomkinson states, “The Literacy Council is truly a volunteer-driven organization; our small staff depends on volunteers for everything we do.  We are so grateful to all of our volunteers for their talent and for their dedication to CFLC.” Festivities kick-off at 5:00 PM with a welcome by Executive Director, Yasmin Tomkinson – this will include a short presentation on the renovation, salute to CFLC’s volunteers and a brief Major Donor recognition ceremony. The welcome will be proceeded by a building ribbon-cutting celebration with Mayor Bill Saffo, community partners, and CFLC students, volunteers and staff.  At 5:30 PM guests will be invited to join in on a commemorative aerial group photograph of the CFLC campus. CFLC Building Committee Members will host tours of the campus from 5:45 – 7:00...
