WILMINGTON — Perennial powerhouse Wilmington Cape Fear Rotary Club won the Cape Fear Literacy Council’s 28th annual Spelling Bee for Literacy, held Thursday night at the Terraces on Sir Tyler.

Wilmington Cape Fear — Katie Peel, Jane Ranney and J. Lewis Walker — bested a team from defending champion Rotary Club of Wilmington in the “killer bee” round, consisting of 10 jawbreakers such as “autochthonous,” “oenophile,” “putsch” and “sabermetrician.”

It was the 10th time Wilmington Cape Fear has been champion of the local adult spelling bee. Teams representing the club had won in 1993, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
