Orientation Class: "CFLC 101"

Did you know that almost 1 in 4 adults in our area struggle with their reading and writing skills? Join the Cape Fear Literacy Council for an orientation session to learn about illiteracy and what we are doing to make a difference. You will learn about who we serve and how we do it, as well as how to get involved. This workshop is a pre-requisite to becoming a volunteer tutor in Adult Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Sessions will be offered every month. Please reserve a space by calling 251-0911.

Adult Basic Literacy Workshop:

This 14-hour workshop is led by certified trainers and is designed to prepare volunteers to work one-on-one with an adult learner. Content includes: understanding the adult learner, teaching techniques and best practices, goal setting, using appropriate materials, problem solving and resources. The final session of the workshop takes place after tutors and students have had a chance to work together a few times. Volunteers who complete this workshop are certified by ProLiteracy America.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Workshop:

This 9-hour workshop is led by certified trainers and is designed to prepare volunteers to work one-on-one with an adult for whom English is not the primary language. Content includes: understanding the ESOL learner; developing the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening; and using pictures, music and movement to enhance learning. Volunteers who complete this workshop are certified by ProLiteracy America.

All sessions take place in the Literacy Council training room. Please register in advance for any workshop by calling (910) 251-0911. For information about fees, contact the Literacy Council.
