I expected to become my student's mentor. I didn't expect that she would become my mentor.

The Cape Fear Literacy Council depends on volunteers – they are the backbone of our organization. Volunteers who go through training to be tutors are the ones who directly teach and support adult learners who are working to improve their lives.
Becoming a tutor is a significant commitment; helping someone improve
his or her literacy and life skills requires dedication on the part of the volunteer.
However, it is a rewarding experience, one that is often inspiring and that
can literally change someone's life. The Literacy Council is always looking
for volunteer tutors to help meet the
need of the communities we serve.
There are other instructional opportunities such as teaching a small class
or in the computer lab.
How to become a Tutor:
| 1) |
Attend a 2-hour Orientation Class
"CFLC 101" in addition to the 14-hour Adult Basic Literacy
certification workshop or the 9-hour
ESOL certification workshop. |
| 2) |
Our Literacy Coordinator, Yasmin,
personally matches each volunteer with a literacy student – taking
into consideration both practical needs and personal interests. Our ESOL
Coordinator matches each volunteer with an ESOL student. |
| 3) |
Each tutor receives learning materials and literacy
goals appropriate for his or her student, designated by our Adult Literacy
Intake Coordinator. |
| 4) |
Tutor and student begin meeting. Usually the
first meeting is at the Literacy Council; after that, you can continue to
meet at the Council, the library, or any other mutually convenient location. |
| 5) |
Tutors and students work together and are supported
by Literacy Council staff and trainers as needed. Tutors and students usually
meet 1-2 times per week, for about 1.5 hours at a time. |
| 6) |
Tutors can attend optional in-service trainings to enhance their skills. |
