Cape Fear Literacy Council and Grand Patron Perry’s Emporium proudly announce the 26th Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 7 PM at the Piney Valley United Methodist Church (3788 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington). We invite the community to share in this fun evening devoted to words! Admission is FREE and there will be light refreshments, audience games and prizes, and fun for both audience and competitors. You can help your favorite team with the “Best Cheering Section” prize!

Not the traditional spelling bee, this friendly competition fields teams of three adults who work together to spell words that are increasingly more difficult in each round. The grand prize- in addition to bragging rights – is the engraved, traveling Championship Trophy. Other team prizes include “Best Team Name,” “Best Costume” and “Best Cheering Section” prize! Businesses, civic groups and individuals are invited to register a team for $375 or become a sponsor at the $500, or $1,000 level. Friends of literacy can also become a “Honeycomb” sponsor for a $50 donation.

Olujimi Mookie Jumoke, who grew up in the Wilmington area, dropped out of school in the seventh grade due to problems with math and struggles with dyslexia and ADHD. Later, after being jailed for a drug-related offense, he worked toward earning his GED.

Jumoke, whose mother taught him the importance of reading, passed four of the five GED test portions. But he failed the math section about five times.

Every time I failed it was just like taking a piece out of me, Jumoke says. It was kind of just draining my hope.

A woman at Cape Fear Community College, where the test was administered, witnessed his frustration and gave him contact information for the literacy council.

Recently, Shannon Rae Gentry of the Lumina News posted about the Cape Fear Literacy Council:

The Cape Fear Literacy Council (CFLC) was among the grant recipients of $6,000 to build its adult literacy skills programs through the use of computers. Along with other literacy programs, the council offers English as a second language and a computer-learning lab, but the adult basic literacy program includes one-on-one tutoring to improve skills in reading, writing and math, with small classes in specific subjects like computer skills.

With volunteers, CFLC provides free and confidential learning programs to help adults reach their literacy goals, with ages 18 and older benefiting from the program. Along with a large number of minority and international students, there are many native Wilmingtonians who come to various classes.
