RECENT FUNDRAISERS
March 1, 2008 - Mardi Gras Gala
September 20, 2007 - Spelling Bee—How do you spell s-u-c-c-e-s-s?
This year marks our 20th year for the Bee, held at the Scottish Rite building.
The hottest competition in town is for the coveted Cape Fear Literacy Spelling
Bee Championship trophy. Held on the third Thursday in September at the
Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, the CFLC Spelling Bee has become a community
tradition. It’s easy to join the fun. It’s not like the scary
school bees where you had to stand all by yourself on the stage. In our
adult Spelling Bee, teams of three spellers work together to correctly write
their final answer on an overhead transparency.
May 3 - 6 - Free Comic Book Day 2007 at Fanboy Comics
Proceeds from a raffle at Wilmington's Fanboy Comics store benefitted Cape Fear
Literacy Council. The raffle was held in conjunction with Free Comic Book Day
2007, a worldwide promotional event.
April 21, 2007 - "Get a Clue - Support Literacy" Road Rally/Scavenger
Hunt
On a gorgeous coastal Carolina Saturday, 31 driver-navigator teams set out from
the Battleship North Carolina parking lot to follow a list of clues that would
take them through the roadways of New Hanover and Brunswick counties. Proceeds
from the Rally were designated to support the adult literacy programs of Cape
Fear Literacy Council and Brunswick County Literacy Council.
Trophy winners - first, second, third and the all-in-good fun last place Turtle
award - were determined by the teams closest to the pre-set course mileage with
the most clues retrieved and scavenger hunt items collected. Feedback from participants
has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic for the Rally, raising $4,500 to be divided
between CFLC and BCLC.
