Where do tutors meet with their students?
We recommend that you have your first meeting at the Literacy Council. Many tutor-student pairs continue to meet at the Council; we have private rooms for study and access to helpful resources. The alternative is to meet at another public location convenient to you both, such as one of the library branches.
How often do tutors meet with their students?
We recommend that you meet with your student twice each week, for one-and-a-half hours each time. The ESOL program also has small classes that meet twice each week for two hours each time.
How long do tutors work with their students?
The time will vary according to each student’s needs, time available, and motivation to reach his/her goals. While some students just need to brush up on specific skills, most adult learners have goals that will take years to achieve. We ask that volunteer instructors be prepared to commit for at least six months because the learning process takes time.
If a student has a learning difficulty, does a tutor need special training to work with them?
Many of our Adult Basic Literacy students have some degree of learning difficulty. The Tutor Certification Workshop and the research-based instructional materials we provide are full of strategies to address these needs. CFLC staff is always available to discuss techniques with tutors and support their efforts with students.
